Reaching your objective fast and safe with a new alliance: COMEDCO. The new alliance assits pharmaceutical companies with their start into the manufacturing and packaging process of transdermal dressings and oral dispersible films. Today's technology offers new methods to administer medication. Pills and syringes will remain; however, there are many reasons to expand how to administer medications. An example is older people in need of care who have difficulty swallowing and where pills might not safely reach the intended "target". Or illnesses, which may require frequent shots. Cases like these require alternative solutions that are still effective but more convenient for the patient.

It also makes sense to transport the substances as close as possible directly to the affected area during administering. A lower drug concentration and less stress to the gastrointestinal tract are additional advantages to choose transdermal dressings or oral dispersible films.

A higher demand in oral dispersible film (ODF) and transdermal dressings (TDS - transdermal systems) is already apparent for the m achine manufacturing industry, especially in the Asian and U.S. market.

New administration forms for pharmaceutical agents becoming increasingly important

The packaging industry has the responsibility to follow this trend and to develop new designs and present solutions. The idea behind COMEDCO is to make it easy and safe for pharmaceutical companies to start their new developments for transdermal and ODF products. The COMEDCO portfolio includes laboratory or development equipment platforms, which are scalable to medium and large size production capacities.

Development expenses occur during the launch of ODF or TDS product. Here the machine builder can help to reach the objective faster and with less expenditure. Answers to questions like: What is the best suitable application and dosing system for a certain drug? What is the best carrier material for which drug? How can a correct homogeneous substance per piece or unit be guaranteed and controlled?

The production of transdermal dressings and ODF products starts with the coating process where the substance is applied to the carrier material by a COMEDCO machine. Depending on the product, a certain drying time has to be considered which takes place within the machine.

Subsequently the carrier material with the applied substance is cut and rolled into individual rolls. The product, depending on the drying process and the strict separation of different pharmaceutical substances, to avoid cross-contamination, may require a batch process. The coating process takes place in the first part of the COMEDCO machine.

Expert Duo

The packaging process is completed in the second part of the COMEDCO machine. In this part of the machine, exisiting (product depending) carrier material can be removed, new carrier material introduced, film would be cut to a defined size, separated and reunited on a carrier film and packaged. Packaging of transdermal dressing is often more complex than packaging of oral dispersible film due to a wider variety of product options and different processing methods. The COMEDCO machine offers continuous or intermittent converting and packaging processes.

This part of the COMEDCO machine is based on technologies from Optima Life Science. Optima Life Science offers expertise from a variety of completed projects for ODF and TDS products, as well as from state-of-the-art wound care packaging processes. The company made a name for itself across the industry through flexibility with complex automated processes. The Samba® Mini 4300 Printbar System, by FUJIFILM Dimatix, is an application development or manufacturing tool for companies looking to jet a variety of Fujifilm or other fluids, which allows for development of high quality in-line jetting applications, or single-pass high volume manufacturing.

Samba drop-on demand inkjet printheads can print drops at over 100 khz, each directed to a precise location, producing high resolution single-pass imprints at high speed. Fujifilm’s patented RediJet®recirculation system enables printbars to be quickly primed, resulting in faster print readiness time, minimal ink waste, and improved reliability. Each Silicon MEMS constructed printhead has 2,048 nozzles to deliver a native 1,200 dpi resolution with an ink drop as small as three picoliters.

The easy-to-use tabletop system includes one printbar, a control cabinet, PC and software, and the option to purchase additional accessories.

Nanoimprint is the new Hot Topic

Dusseldorf, GERMANY. The cooperation between Coatema Coating Machinery and temicon has revealed a brand-new R2R-Nanoimprint line. The new line allows nanoimprinting of seamless structures on rolled products up to the width of 300 millimeters for various applications. At the same time, temicon has ordered with Coatema a production line of one meter working width. This line is going to start operations in the second half of this year.

Researchers working on process development for high-volume manufacturing of innovative 2D nanomaterial products

“HEA2D” consortium aims to create basis for end-to-end processing chain for two-dimensional nanomaterials

AIXTRON SE (FSE: AIXA; NASDAQ: AIXG), a worldwide leading provider of deposition equipment to the semiconductor industry, is working together with five partners in the “HEA2D” project to investigate the production, qualities, and applications of 2D nanomaterials.

When integrated into mass production processes, 2D materials have the potential to create integrated and systematic product and production solutions that are sustainable in social, economic, and ecological terms. Using 2D materials will help to address topics such as climate change, an environmentally-friendly and affordable energy supply or mobility, addressing the increasing scarcity of resources. These materials also enable new and innovative solutions to be explored. Even though the potential harbored by this new class of materials has been demonstrated for increasing numbers of applications and with ever greater dynamism in a laboratory environment, attempts at high-volume product manufacturing functionalized with 2D materials have so far failed due to the fragmented production chain. In view of this, material-based innovations with 2D materials have not yet led to any major product innovations in practice.

The joint project HEA2D is now researching an end-to-end processing chain consisting of various deposition processes for 2D materials, processes for transfer onto plastic foils, and mass integration into plastics components. AIXTRON’s partners for implementing systems technology and integrating materials into plastic molded parts are the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT), Coatema Coating Machinery GmbH (Coatema), and Kunststoff-Institut Lüdenscheid (K.I.M.W.). This work is being supported in terms of nano-analytics and the development of prototype components by the Institutes of “Electronic Materials and Nanostructures” (University of Duisburg-Essen) and “Graphene-based Nanotechnology” (University of Siegen).

Drawing on co-operations already in place at the project partners, the project results will be communicated to interested companies worldwide. The aim here is to integrate suggestions from end users into the production chain at an early stage of development already. To this end, the project will also use the platform operated by the “Graphene and 2D Materials” specialist group and the North Rhine Westphalia plastics cluster “Kunststoffland NRW”.

One focus of AIXTRON’s subproject involves researching (MO)-CVD processes and systems technology for the deposition of optically active 2D semiconductor materials such as molybdenum tungsten (Mo, W), selenium sulfur (Se, S), and graphene. Furthermore, together with its project partners the company will be working out a roll-to-roll concept for use in the synthesis and transfer of graphene. To ensure the efficient realization of a demonstration tool which is a core aspect of the HEA2D innovations, preliminary investigations will be performed, particularly to identify suitable source chemicals, on an existing system at AIXTRON’s applications laboratory. Based on the findings, the existing system technology will be enhanced. Together with its project partners, demonstrators on the basis of 2D semiconductor materials will be manufactured.

“HEA2D” is being promoted with funds from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) 2014-2020.

FUJIFILM Dimatix, Inc. announces the new Dimatix Material Printer DMP-2850, with innovative features and enhanced performance for technology development in printed electronics, displays, and beyond, which is an upgraded and enhanced version of the industry leading inkjet deposition research platform, the DMP-2831.

Since its launch over 10 years ago, the DMP-2831 has become the industry standard laboratory tool for the development of inkjet deposition fluids and processes, with approximately 1,000 units placed worldwide in academic and industrial facilities. FUJIFILM Dimatix is now introducing the DMP-2850 as a significant upgrade to better serve R&D customers with improved cameras, more intuitive application software, and provisions for automated data collection and analysis.

The DMP-2850 includes an embedded 64-bit PC preconfigured with Microsoft Windows 8.1 and updated Drop Manager software. Two high-speed cameras with finer resolution optics provide superior images for drop-watching and print inspection functions. To accompany the hardware changes, the DMP-2850 will build on user accessibility and flexibility with an enhanced software platform. Remote access API and open architecture enable remote monitoring of cameras and printer status. More options for complex printing will be available with feature recognition, auto registration functions, and support for multi-layer printing. Jetting evaluation and drop watching operations will also benefit from automated analysis.

A complete platform for precision printing of materials, jetting analysis, and fluid development, the DMP-2850 provides the user with powerful tools for R&D work. A drop watching system enables jetting performance to be analyzed in combination with extensive control over printhead operation. A fiducial camera facilitates print inspection and accurate print registration to existing features. Cartridges are available with two native drop sizes, one and 10 picoliters, allowing customers their choice of jettable fluids. Silicon MEMS cartridge technology ensures compatibility with a wide range of organic solvent or aqueous-based fluid chemistries.
